Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins. They are split into two groups: essential amino acids; and non-essential amino acids. There are eight essential amino acids, essential meaning that these can only be supplied by diet, and 20 non-essential amino acids, which can be made by the body.  Many amino acids require vitamin B6 for their transport across the intestinal mucosa into the bloodstream.
