What is Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid)?
Vitamin C is an essential nutrient that produces compounds vital to maintaining specific chemical activities within the body.
Vitamin C is not manufactured by the body and is water soluble, thus not stored in the body. Hence, it is vital to ensure that we take in an adequate supplies – usually from a balanced diet.
Vitamin C is also known as Ascorbic Acid, and refers to Vitamin C (single entity Ascorbic Acid) that is not bound to any other compounds.
There are many different forms of Vitamin C.
The world’s foremost Vitamin C proponent and Nobel Prize winner Linus Pauling published the book Vitamin C and the Common Cold in 1970 and devoted a large part of his life and reputation to inform the world of the importance of Vitamin C.
What does Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) do?
In living organisms, Ascorbate is an antioxidant and protects cells against oxidative stress. It is a co-factor in several vital enzymatic reactions.
Vitamin C is needed to aid growth and repair tissues, to heal wounds and to maintain and repair teeth and bones. Another vital role Vitamin C plays is in helping with the production of collagen.
Vitamin C is widely known as an antioxidant. A build up of free radicals over a prolonged period of time may add to the ageing process and unwanted health conditions. Antioxidants can block damage by free radicals. Ascorbic Acid also increases iron absorption and contributes to the normal function of the immune system.
Many people believe that Vitamin C can cure the common cold but the scientific evidence for this is conflicting. It is well documented that Vitamin C may help prevent a cold if you are deficient in Ascorbic Acid.
Ref: Douglas RM, Hemilä H, Chalker E, Treacy B. Vitamin C for preventing and treating the common cold. Cochrane Database Syst Rev. 2007 Jul 18;(3):CD000980.
A deficiency of Vitamin C causes scurvy. This disease is rarely seen today in healthy adults but can affect infants and the elderly especially if they do not have a balanced diet including fruits and vegetables.
